The Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N), which has been lobbying to reinstate Nepal as a Hindu state, decided on Sunday to hold a series of protest programmes across the country demanding to terminate secularism from the draft constitution. The fourth largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA) has announced it would stage protest outside the CA building and in the headquarters of various districts for an indefinite period starting on Tuesday to mount pressure on the CA.The RPP-N has registered its note of dissent in the CA over the incorporation of secularism, republicanism and federalism, demanding a referendum before taking decision on such issues. It has also been calling for a detail discussion on the issues in the CA, claiming that it would accept everything that is decided following the due process.“Our protest is against the major party’s attempt to turn CA as a rubber stamp,” said RPP-N Chairman Kamal Thapa at a press meet on Sunday. “The decision made by few leaders of so called major political parties cannot be imposed on the CA.”
Accusing the major parties for distorting the preliminary draft of the constitution without the consent of Drafting Committee members, the party said a handful of leaders from those parties had altered several provisions that were finalised on June 28. Besides, including “socialism-oriented state” in the preamble unilaterally, the provision for holding local elections within six months was removed without consultation, the party has charged.
